CMAS Information & Opt-out process

Posted March 22, 2023

Dear Bear Valley Families,

In a few weeks we will enter Spring, which also means it’s time to prepare for this year’s Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) assessments. We will administer CMAS assessments Monday, April 17th through Friday, April 21th. Only 8th grade students will take science CMAS in addition to English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. During this week, we will run an early release schedule, from 7:30am-1pm.

Families may choose to opt their student out of participating in this year’s assessment. Students must either participate in all assessments or complete the Opt Out process. If you are considering opting your student out of CMAS testing, please do so by Friday, April 14th.

How to Opt Out of Assessments

  • Option #1:  Complete the Non-Participation Request for Assessments form and return  it to the Front office. Forms are attached and can also be accessed here  ➤ ➤English Version (tinyurl.com/CMASOptOutE) or Spanish Version (tinyurl.com/CMASOptOutS)
  • Option #2: You may send an email to Christopher Plesko <christopher_plesko@dpsk12.net> or write a letter to the school. If you have more than one child, you will need to indicate the names of all Bear Valley students in your household who you are opting out

Students who opt out of participating in CMAS assessments and attend school while we are testing will be asked to complete an alternative assignment or project as determined by the grade level teams. Access to cell phones and chromebook devices will not be allowed to ensure the integrity of our testing environment and systems.

It is critical that all students are in attendance and on time (7:30am) to school during CMAS week. If students do not attend school during CMAS testing, it will negatively impact their overall attendance percentage.

If you have specific questions or concerns regarding CMAS, the Opt Out process and Bear Valley’s plan for administering this year’s assessment, please contact us by calling the school or emailing any of the administrative team.
