Dear Bear Valley Families:
It is our priority to keep you informed of incidents related to student safety. We received a report today that one of our students was spotted with a gun on school property. We placed the school on a secured perimeter as officers from the DPS Department of Safety and local law enforcement are conducting an investigation. The search did not turn up a gun.
Please know that we take student safety very seriously, and our discipline policy will guide whether discipline, restorative practices, and/or other appropriate actions will be implemented. Due to student privacy, we are unable to share any information about the student or their consequences at this time.
I would like to assure you that the safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. We take all threats seriously and members of law enforcement investigate each instance. In order to maintain a safe environment, it is critical that students feel comfortable reporting to the appropriate adults if they hear about or see a weapon on our campus. If your child hears a threat made against another student or the school, we strongly encourage them to report it immediately to a trusted adult, Safe2Tell at 877-542-7233, online at safe2tell.org, or the Denver police non-emergency line at 720-913-2000.
As a reminder to all students, it is never OK to bring weapons of any kind – real or fake – onto school property. Please take this opportunity to review safety messages with your students and encourage them to always report anything that doesn’t seem right. Please remember to regularly check your student’s backpacks and personal belongings to help prevent them from bringing dangerous objects to school.
We will have members of the DPS Crisis Team at the school to help any of our students who are struggling with what occurred today. You are also welcome to reach out to our school psychologist or school counselor with any mental health concerns or questions.
We are grateful for the quick and professional response from the Department of Safety and Denver police. Thank you for your support in keeping our students safe. As always, feel free to contact me directly with any questions or concerns at Teresa_Klava@DPSK12.org or (720) 423 9600.
Sincerely,
Teresa Klava
